The official website of the Ibn Rushd College of Education for Humanities is pleased to share a landmark decision documenting the academic legacy of our parent institution. The University of Baghdad has officially adopted 2 March 1908 as its founding date, in accordance with the resolution of the University Council at its sixteenth (extraordinary) session and following approval by the Council of Opinion at the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. The decision affirms the historical and academic continuity of Iraq’s oldest university.
The decision is based on the establishment of the College of Law on 2 March 1908, recognized as the first nucleus of higher education in Iraq. Accordingly, this date replaces the previously adopted founding date, formally documenting the University’s deep-rooted academic heritage.
Under the new resolution, 2 March will serve as the University’s official anniversary and will be incorporated into its official emblem, correspondence, website, and digital platforms. It will also become the official date for the University’s graduation ceremonies, further strengthening its institutional identity and preserving its distinguished academic legacy.
The President of the University of Baghdad, Professor Dr. Alaa Abdul Hassan Al-Zughaybi, emphasized that the decision represents far more than a revision of the University’s founding date. Rather, it constitutes an authentic recognition of the history of higher education in Iraq and provides scholarly and legal documentation of an academic heritage spanning more than a century. He noted that the decision reinforces the University’s identity as the institutional successor to Iraq’s earliest higher education establishment, enhancing its national and international standing while safeguarding its legacy for future generations.
