About College

The history of  the College of Education Ibn Rushd for Human Sciences correlates with the history of the development of  education in Iraq. The Ministry of Education established College of Education Ibn Rushd in November 1923 AD corresponding to 1341 AH. The college is opened under the name: High Teachers Home ( Dar Almulmeen Al-Alia). At the beginning of its establishment, College of Education Ibn Rushd for Human Sciences has two branches: Natural Sciences and Humanities. Math has been added later.

At its beginning, Dar Almulmeen Al-Alia hosted only evening classes. Each student is paid an amount of (15) Rupees per month, equivalent to (one dinar and 125 Fils). In 1929,  Dar Almulmeen Al-Alia established   morning studies. To secure places for students from other provinces, Dar Almulmeen Al-Alia established dorms which was attached to the main campus.

As for enrollment, Dar Almulmeen Al-Alia  admits graduates of secondary school or equivalent diplomas f at the expense of the government for two years of extensive classes. The  admitted  students are required to sign a contract, pledging to serve in the Ministry of Education in the position assigned to him/her by the ministry. The period that the graduates required to work equals the years that students spent in the Dar Almulmeen Al-Alia. Professor Talib Mushtaq who was the  director of the Central High School, is assigned as a deputy dean and lecturer. Dr. Naji Al-Aseel assigned as Dar Almulmeen Al-Alia’s Dean.

In 1931, High Teachers’ Home/ Dar Almulmeen Al-Alia   was abolished by the Ministry of Education because  the level of study in it is not enough to prepare high school teachers. It is necessary to rely on university graduates abroad, justifying this by the low level of Dar Almulmeen Al-Alia, as well as the student expenses at the American University of Beirut are (1300) rupees per year, which is about (9.250) dinars (nine dinars and two hundred and fifty fils) per year, which is much less than (1615) rupees, which is (12.125) twelve dinars and one hundred and twenty-five Fils)> this amount is part of the expenses of the student’s study in Dar Almulmeen Al-Alia.

The classes of Dar Almulmeen Al-Alia were terminated in 1931, after the graduation of the course of that year, fourteen graduates out of a total of nineteen students. The appointment of graduates to the staff of Secondary Education, the urgent need for teachers and the small number of students sent abroad, showed the pitfalls of this policy. This need required an urgent opening to classes for teachers. The Ministry of Education reopened Dar Almulmeen Al-Alia a in 1935. The duration of study in it was also two years. However, the duration of study in Dar Almulmeen Al-Alia was increased to a third year in 1937. In the same year, the study became mixed, after the admission of girls. In that year, a branch for inspection and another for physical education were added. This system lasts until 1949-1950. In 1949, religious studies were introduced into the curriculum of the High Teachers’ Home.

The number of students admitted students was interestingly accelerating within the first three decades. It started as  (50) students in 1923-1924. It reached (86) students in the academic year 1936-1937. The students number continued to increase until it reached (102) student in the academic year 1937-1938. The number of students is further increased to reach (654) students in the academic year 1949-1950. The number of students became (1533) in the academic year 1954-1955, and 1560 student in the academic year 1962-1963. The academic year of 1967-1968, there were  (3306) students.

The High Teachers’ Home or Dar Almulmeen Al-Alia  was named the Faculty of Education on 30 September 1958 and was held in the same year at the University of Baghdad. After the promulgation of Law No. 29 of 1958, which made the main objective of the Faculty of Education is to prepare teachers for intermediate and preparatory studies, Professor Kamal Ibrahim was appointed Dean.
Its curricula have been distributed in three types of studies :

First: Specialization studies, including Applied, Mathematical, Social and Literary Sciences.
Second: General culture studies, including: Foreign Languages and Addressing Contemporary Problems.
Third, professional studies including: Education, Psychology and Teaching Outcomes.

The institution awards its graduates bachelor’s degree. Graduates got exemptions from Army Services  for the urgent need of their services, which has increased students’ demand for it. The college continued its progress and expansion. However, its career was hampered and confused after the 1968 coup d ‘état, which closed the following year, without apparent reason. In the 1968-1969 academic year the College of Education was terminated. After which a two-year post-bachelor’s degree was opened to prepare college graduates as middle and middle school teachers in 1972, where graduates were awarded a high degree in education.

Two years later, in 1974, the College of Education was reopened. The duration of its studies was limited to four years, and the graduates of the preparatory school were admitted to its scientific and literary branches and several teachers were licensed. The graduate is awarded a bachelor’s degree in arts or sciences. Each bachelor’s degree is based on specialization. In 1988, the college was divided into two faculties:

The Faculty of College of Education I (Ibn Rushd) comprises two groups of departments:  human studies and  educational and psychological studies Faculty of College of  Education II (Ibn al-Haytham ) comprises  two branches of studies: scientific studies  and  educational and psychological studies. But because of the objection of the Faculty of Education II to this name, the first (Ibn Rushd) and the second (Ibn  al-Haytham) were renamed. In the academic year 1987-1988, graduate studies were initiated. Master’s and doctoral studies were introduced in the Department of Arabic Language and Literature, and master’s degree in the Department of English Language, Geographical Sciences and History.

In 1992-1993, a section called “Teaching Methods of Quran Sciences” was opened. Graduate studies intuited that year until 2003. It was reopened opened in 2007.

The College has seven departments:

  • -The Arabic Language Section
