The study aimed to shed light on the linguistic construction of the act of refutation in American presidential debates from the perspective of critical stylistics. Refutation is considered a strategic response to counterarguments. The research analyzed debates from the 2020 and 2024 U.S. presidential elections between Donald Trump and Joe Biden, focusing on how the tools of critical stylistics reflect ideological positions and persuasive intentions.
The study concluded that refutation in presidential debates is a multilayered communicative act, formed through strategic linguistic choices and deliberate ideological framing, contributing to a deeper understanding and stylistic-critical analysis of political discourse. Additionally, the study provided recommendations and suggestions for future research based on its findings.
