University of Baghdad / Ibn Rushd College of Education for Human Sciences organized the defense of a Master’s thesis entitled “International Population Policy between the Theories of Ibn Khaldun and Thomas Malthus” submitted by Eman Kadhim Mohammed from the Department of Geography, specializing in Human Geography. The examination committee was chaired by Professor Dr. Wasan Karim Abdul Ridha and included Professor Dr. Wissam Abdullah Jassim as supervisor and committee member, Assistant Professor Dr. Rana Mohammed Majeed as a committee member, and Assistant Professor Dr. Nadia Nouri Ali as an external member representing the College of Arts at University of Basrah.
The study aimed to shed light on the mechanisms through which the demographic variable influences the economy in general and food security in particular. The research emphasized that examining demographic development and its implications constitutes an important starting point for understanding current realities and identifying possible responses. Furthermore, the thesis sought to explore the contrasting perspectives on international population policy through a comparative analysis of Ibn Khaldun’s theory of human civilization and Thomas Malthus’s theory of population growth.
The study highlighted the significant role of social, economic, and environmental factors in shaping population growth and demonstrated how these factors can influence population policies and decision-making processes related to them.
