On the occasion of World Geological Diversity Day, Ibn Rushd College of Education for Humanities, University of Baghdad, organized a workshop titled “Elements of Geological Diversity: Rocks, Minerals, Landforms, Fossils, Soil Types, and Water Resources”. The workshop was presented by Prof. Dr. Aqil Abbas Al-Zubaidi, member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, and attended by Dr. Mohammad Abdulwahid Jiyas, Assistant Dean for Administrative and Financial Affairs, along with a number of faculty members, staff, and students of the College.

The workshop addressed the importance of geological diversity elements in human life, such as gasoline used in cars, which is derived from petroleum reservoirs found in highly permeable rocks, and the car’s structure made from rocks and minerals, highlighting that these are all elements of geological diversity. It also demonstrated the close relationship between geomorphology topics studied in the Geography Department and geological topics that focus on rock layers beneath the Earth’s surface and the formative forces affecting them.
