The College of Education Ibn Rushd for Humanities at the University of Baghdad discussed a master’s thesis entitled “The Functions of Imagery in the Poetry of Pre-Islamic Long-Lived Poets,” submitted by Umama Raad Sabbar, a researcher in the Department of Arabic Language, specializing in Literature.
The thesis defense committee was chaired by Prof. Dr. Mohammed Qasim Laibi, with Prof. Dr. Alaa Mohammed Lazim as a member and supervisor, and Assistant Prof. Dr. Nardeen Redha Karim as a member. Prof. Dr. Israa Khalil Fayyad from the College of Education, Al-Mustansiriyah University, also joined the committee as an external member.
The study aimed to explore the dimensions of poetic imagery in the works of long-lived poets of the pre-Islamic period and analyze its transformation from mere artistic embellishment into a psychological tool that alleviates the fear of the passage of time. It also examined the rhetorical dimensions that constitute a fundamental basis for highlighting the significance of the subject, particularly where poetic imagery intersects with extensive life experience. The study further explored these poets’ ability to transform physical weakness into imaginative strength in their poetry, making their poetic imagery rich in psychological, argumentative, and aesthetic meanings that reshape human values.
