The College of Education Ibn Rushd for Humanities at the University of Baghdad discussed a master’s thesis entitled “Ibn al-Shajari’s Hamasa (d. 542 AH) and al-Jarawi’s Moroccan Hamasa (d. 609 AH): A Comparative Study,” submitted by Sahira Hassan Mahmoud, a researcher in the Department of Arabic Language, specializing in Arabic Literature.
The thesis defense committee was chaired by Prof. Dr. Zahra Khudair Abbas, with Prof. Dr. Susan Saib Salman as a member and supervisor, and Assistant Prof. Dr. Nouri Kadhim Amnasif as a member. Prof. Dr. Hisham Nihad Shihab from the College of Arts, Al-Iraqia University, also joined the committee as an external member.
The study aimed to conduct a comparative analysis of Ibn al-Shajari’s Hamasa in the Mashriq (Eastern Islamic world) and Abu al-Abbas al-Jarawi’s Moroccan Hamasa in the Maghreb (Western Islamic world), examining their similarities and differences at the historical, structural, semantic, and stylistic levels.
The study reached several findings, most notably that Ibn al-Shajari’s Hamasa is characterized by the diversity of its themes and semantic fields, while the Moroccan Hamasa demonstrates a stronger connection to religious, social, and jihad-related values. The study also revealed a clear presence of distinctive stylistic features in both works, particularly at the phonological, lexical, and syntactic levels. These features contributed to highlighting the heroic and passionate character of the selected texts and confirmed the significance of both works in representing an important aspect of the development of literary taste in the Mashriq and Maghreb.
