The Ibn Rushd College of Education for Humanities at the University of Baghdad held a discussion of a master’s thesis entitled “The Cities and Districts of Yemen in Yaqut al-Hamawi’s Mu’jam al-Buldan (d. 626 AH/1228 CE).” The thesis was presented by Yasser Samir Jabr, a researcher in the Department of History, specializing in Islamic History.
The discussion committee was chaired by Prof. Dr. Ghaniya Yasser Kabashi, with Prof. Dr. Mushtaq Kadhim Akoul serving as a member and supervisor, and Prof. Dr. Wissan Samin Mohammed as a member. Assistant Prof. Dr. Jawad Mohammed Aftan joined the committee as an external member.
The study aimed to examine the cities and districts of Yemen mentioned by Yaqut al-Hamawi in Mu’jam al-Buldan, identifying their locations, names, and historical and geographical significance.
The study concluded that Mu’jam al-Buldan represents an important source for studying the cities and districts of Yemen, providing valuable information on their scientific, economic, and urban characteristics. It also compared al-Hamawi’s accounts with other historical and geographical sources.
