The Ibn Rushd College of Education for Humanities at the University of Baghdad discussed a master’s thesis entitled “A Climatic Assessment of the Factors Affecting the Indoor Residential Climate during Winter in Al-Hurriya District.” The thesis was presented by Noor Abdul Razzaq Alwan Al-Ameri, from the Department of Geography, specializing in Physical Geography.

The examination committee was chaired by Prof. Dr. Yousif Mohammed Ali, with Prof. Dr. Salam Hatif Ahmed serving as both supervisor and committee member, Assist. Prof. Dr. Abdul Salam Mohammed Mayel as a committee member, and Prof. Dr. Abdul Razzaq Khayoun Khudair from the College of Arts, University of Dhi Qar, as the external examiner.

The study aimed to comprehensively assess the external factors influencing the indoor climate of residential buildings during winter. It also examined the impact of modern construction materials and architectural designs compared with traditional housing models, while identifying approaches to improve indoor environmental efficiency and create more comfortable and sustainable living environments. In addition, the research analyzed the interaction between external climatic conditions and internal building characteristics affecting indoor residential climate.

The findings revealed significant spatial and temporal variations in indoor climate between the two houses examined during the winter season. The study showed that the modern, smaller dwelling exhibited higher thermal efficiency and better heat retention than the larger, older house. It also concluded that building characteristics—particularly floor area, building age, construction materials, and thermal insulation—are among the most influential factors determining indoor thermal performance and its response to external climatic conditions. Furthermore, the effectiveness of heating systems was found to depend largely on the architectural characteristics of each dwelling.
