The College of Education Ibn Rushd for Humanities at the University of Baghdad discussed a PhD dissertation entitled “The Effectiveness of a Proposed Strategy Based on Julian Rotter’s Theory in Developing Silent Reading Competencies among Fifth-Grade Primary School Students”, submitted by researcher Hussein Zuhair Hassan from the Department of Arabic Language, specializing in Methods of Teaching Arabic Language.
The discussion committee was chaired by Prof. Dr. Ruqayya Abdul A’imma Abdullah, with Prof. Dr. Raed Rasem Younis as member and supervisor, alongside a number of distinguished faculty members from the department. Prof. Dr. Saad Suwadi Taaban participated as an external member from the College of Basic Education at Al-Mustansiriyah University.
The research aimed to develop a proposed strategy based on Julian Rotter’s Theory and identify its effectiveness in improving silent reading competencies among fifth-grade primary school students. The study emphasized the importance of designing educational curricula and teaching strategies that keep pace with contemporary developments, meet students’ needs and interests, and enhance their understanding, comprehension, and academic achievement.
The research concluded that teaching according to the proposed strategy created a more engaging and dynamic learning environment, positively influencing students’ competencies. It also contributed to simplifying the curriculum and increasing students’ interest in learning, thereby stimulating their creative abilities.
The study highlighted that the primary stage is particularly suitable for applying Julian Rotter’s Theory in reading instruction, as students at this level begin developing comprehension and reading speed skills, making them more receptive to strategies aimed at enhancing silent reading competencies.
The researcher recommended incorporating the proposed strategy into modern teaching methods and approaches within Arabic language curricula at colleges and institutes responsible for preparing future teachers of the subject.
