About Department
Historical Overview of the Department:
The Department of Arabic Language was established from the beginning of the College of Education in 1923. It accepts students from preparatory school graduates in its literary and scientific branches to prepare them during the four academic years as teachers of the Arabic language in secondary and preparatory schools. The graduating students are awarded a Bachelor’s degree in the Arabic language and literature. It prepares a teacher for the secondary and preparatory stages according to modern methods of preparing educational teachers.
The Department Vision:
The department seeks to advance knowledge in the fields of Arabic language sciences and literature and to qualify students within the framework of evaluating linguistic pronunciation and enhancing the student’s scientific ability in his specialty, as well as providing graduate studies programs to advance the educational process and keep pace with scientific progress. The department works to achieve excellence and quality in the comprehensive preparation of its students. Integrated and providing them with the knowledge and skills required to succeed in their work while preserving authentic values and making them good citizens to contribute to building and advancing their society by quality standards and academic accreditation in light of the requirements of the times locally, regionally, and globally.
The Department Message:
1. Providing students with teaching methods and strategies appropriate for teaching.
2. Introduce students to the concepts of the Arabic language and its literature and familiarize themselves with the aspects necessary to form the personality of an Arabic language teacher.
3. Providing students with scientific knowledge and concepts in the Arabic language specialty and developing the skills necessary to develop their linguistic and scientific abilities.
4. Preparing educational staff by providing them with educational and pedagogical competencies in light of contemporary trends and accordance with quality standards and academic accreditation.
5. Developing students’ love of knowledge and innovation and belonging to the homeland.
6. Activating educational activities that increase students’ experiences in the department.
7. Achieving excellence, quality, and mastery by investing in the energies of professors and students and the available capabilities because they are strategic wealth and enhancing the ability for research and self-learning.
The Objectives of the Department:
1. Introducing the student to the principles of the educational and pedagogical process.
2. Introduce the student to the concepts of the Arabic language and literature and explain their scientific importance.
3. Training in applying scientific and educational concepts.
4. Helping the student determine the theoretical foundations of the education system and realize that the education system in any country is part of its identity.
5. Helping the student build an expanded knowledge base in caring for students with special needs.
6. Helping the student identify correct linguistic performance concepts and apply them at home, school, and society.
7. Preparing and qualifying scientific competencies in Arabic language and literature to the needs of community institutions.
8. Qualifying specialists in Arabic and preparing them scientifically and educationally according to the most effective methods and approaches.
9. Conducting scientific research and studies, both theoretical and applied, to enrich linguistic knowledge and provide appropriate solutions to linguistic and literary problems.
10. Providing specialized consultations in language and literature to community institutions.
11. Graduating researchers and teachers in linguistic and literary specializations through what the department’s postgraduate programs provide at the master’s and doctoral levels.
Department Activities:
The Arabic Language Department has benefited from electronic innovations in teaching and communicating with others. It has adopted the teaching of digital interactive literature as part of the optional literature subject for the fourth stage at a rate of two hours per week. The Arabic Language Department is the pioneer in teaching this subject and relies entirely on computers. The department has been communicating with other universities through the department’s e-mail address ([email protected]) and the social networking sites (Facebook) and (Telegram) (within the Arabic language group to which several teachers and students have belonged for communication. The department held several seminars and conferences, including:
1. A symposium on the linguistic efforts of Father Insta Marie Al-Carmeli was held in Ibn Rushd Hall in 2009.
2. A symposium on the narrative productions of the Iraqi storyteller (Taha Hamid Al-Shabibi) was held in the hall of Professor Dr. Hashem Taha Shalash in 2010.
3. A memorial ceremony for the late scholar Dr. Hashem Taha Shalash in Ibn Rushd Hall, 2010.
4. A memorial ceremony on the occasion of the passing of the scholar Dr. Nima Rahim Al-Azzawi in Ibn Rushd Hall 2011.
5. Celebrating the signing of the book “The Flash Column” by Dr. Amjad Al-Fadil in the hall of Professor Dr. Hashem Taha Shalash 2012, our department pioneered this activity in Iraqi universities.
6. Signing of a book written by asst. prof. Khaled Hamid Sabry, in Textual Linguistics, 2014 AD.
7. A symposium entitled Pragmatics in the Holy Qur’an, by Majeed Al-Mashatha, was held in Dr. Hashem Taha Shalash Hall 2017.
8. A symposium on Ali Badr’s experience in the world of the novel novelist Ali Badr in 2018.
9. A linguistic symposium on the contributions of the Copenhagen Linguistic School delivered by Dr. Youssef Iskandar in 2019.
10. A scientific workshop on managing the electronic classroom and virtual examination halls, 2020.
11. A scientific workshop on extraction, held by Professor Dr. Ansam Mohammed Rashid 2020.
12. A scientific workshop entitled (Women’s Rights in Islam): Inheritance as a Model. It was established by Assistant Prof. Safaa Al-Fahham in 2023 AD.
13. . A significant celebration in the Ibn Rushd Central Hall on the fifteenth of Shaaban, 2023 AD.
14. The regular Husseini Conference, in cooperation with the al-Abbas Shrine (held every year) since 2020.
15. The department's annual scientific conference has been held since 2012 and was halted during the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.
