Admission to the department of the Kurdish language is centrally carried out by the Ministry of Higher Education rather than within the general admission of the rest of the college departments. Undergraduate studies in the Kurdish language department take four years. A bachelor’s degree in Kurdish (B.A. in Kurdish Language) is awarded to the student after graduation, and the graduate can complete his/her postgraduate studies in Kurdish linguistics, literature, or methods of teaching the Kurdish language.
Postgraduate Studies in the Department of Kurdish Language:
In 1993, postgraduate studies, including master’s and doctorate degrees in Kurdish linguistics and literature, were established with the efforts of Prof. Dr. Warya’s Omar Amin and the department professors. From that time, highly advanced scientific staff were qualified until 2006, when postgraduate studies in the department were suspended because many teaching staff members moved to Iraqi Kurdistan due to the security conditions. This has affected providing the department with qualified scientific staff to sustain teaching, and postgraduate studies in the Kurdish language department have been suspended so far in these two majors: linguistics and literature. However, with continuing persistence, promoting a group of the department's teaching staff, and with the department's relentless efforts and the college's Deanship, postgraduate studies (Master’s degree) in methods of teaching Kurdish language have been reopened in the academic year 2019-2020. The one who finishes his/her master’s degree, will get a certificate in master of education in methods of teaching Kurdish (M.A. Ed. in Methods of Teaching Kurdish Language).
