Brief History of Kurdish Department
The Kurdish Department established in 1959 as the first academic and scientific department at Baghdad University in College of Art. In 1974, the Kurdish department was established in the College of Education Ibn Rushd, after which the old department at the College of Arts had been closed. For more than half a century, many writers, poets, writers, linguists, and intellectuals have been graduated with honors from the Kurdish department. It is worth noting that most of Kurdish departments in Kurdistan and other Iraqi Universities has been considered as branches of Kurdish department at college of Education who celebrated its golden jubilee in 2010/2/14. Primary studies in the Kurdish language department:
Admission to the Kurdish language department is centralized by the Ministry of Higher Education and is not within the general acceptance of the rest of the departments of the Ibn Rushd College of Education. The initial study in the Kurdish language department is four years. After graduation, the student is granted a bachelor’s degree in Kurdish language (B.Ed. in Kurdish Language) The graduate can complete his postgraduate studies in the fields of Kurdish language and literature and methods of teaching the Kurdish language.
Postgraduate studies in the Kurdish language department:
In the year (1993) and with the efforts of Prof. Dr. Waria Omar Amin and the professors of the department, Postgraduate studies (Masters and PhD) were established for Kurdish language and literature specialists, and they continued to qualify advanced scientific cadres until (2006), when postgraduate studies in the department were suspended due to the transfer of many teachers to Iraqi Kurdistan due to the security conditions that were at the time. This negatively affected the supply of the department with qualified scientific cadres to perpetuate teaching. Until now, postgraduate studies in the Kurdish language department have suspended these two majors (language and literature).
