About the English department
Department of English is one of the first and most prestigious departments in the College of Education, in fact in Iraq as a whole. It was established in the twenties of the last century, when the College was then called the High School of Education. Since its inception, the department has been and continues to provide the educational and educational institutions in the country with the best competencies, as it graduated a wonderful constellation of prominent intellectuals, literature, translation and applied sciences, as well as English language teachers who have proven, for decades, high competence and superior professionalism in the field of teaching English as a foreign language. At the secondary and primary levels. The department currently hosts more than 1,751 male and female students distributed over the morning and evening studies, in the four academic levels, and grants a bachelor’s degree in the English language according to the school years system (not semesters - courses). Students in the fourth stage perform practical application in local schools, under the supervision of elite Among the specialists who follow them up with field visits to find out the strengths and weaknesses in their performance and evaluate the latter. It also hosts a number of graduate students - master's degrees in the field of English language, English literature and methods of teaching the English language, as well as a number of doctoral students in the last branch. However, the system of postgraduate studies followed by the department in postgraduate studies differs from that in the primary study, as the system of semesters (courses) is adopted in the preparatory year, while the student devotes himself in the second year to writing a dissertation or dissertation and is not considered a graduate until after passing it with a good grade. The department aims to achieve the following scientific goals:
1. The English department main goal is teaching and training students to be teachers in the secondary and high school of Iraq as well as improving and reforming the scientific aspects of the educational process. 2. The English department has prepared qualified English teachers who they contribute to building an advanced scientific society as well as updating and drawing new plans for this approach. 3. The English department tends to enhance the faculty members scientifically through motivating them to write and publish scientific papers. It also encourages them to attend and participate in scientific conferences to update their knowledge and expertise in English language and linguistic as well as the English literature. 4. The English department seeks to establish and build scientific networks and communications with similar departments in other local, regional, and international universities.
Department objectives:
The general educational goals were derived from the educational strategy used in the country, and are based on the general policy that it follows, taking into account the societal needs and meeting them in a way that responds to the process of technical and scientific development and in line with the requirements of modern life. In addition, the interim goals of the English Language Department for the next five years can be summarized with points that include, but are not limited to, the following: 1- Graduating qualified students to teach English as a foreign language in the country, especially for secondary education that includes intermediate and high school. 2. Contribute - by preparing the successful teacher - in building a civilized civil society capable of communicating with the Arab and international environment in terms of dealing with the data of modern science through mastery of this universal language. 3. Advancement of the scientific and professional reality of the department's teachers by encouraging participation in development courses, workshops, conferences, delegations, and sabbaticals, both inside and outside Iraq. 4. Attempting to obtain opportunities to twin the department with English language departments in English-speaking countries - such as Britain, Australia and the US states - in an effort to raise the scientific level of students and teachers. 5. Reviewing and developing curricula for primary and postgraduate studies in the light of internationally approved curricula. 6. Seek to obtain international accreditation (or accreditation certificate) for the English language departments.
