The thesis is titled: <strong data-start=\"389\" data-end=\"467\">&#8220;A Critical Stylistic Study of Understatement in Selected English Novels.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"469\" data-end=\"504\">The examination committee included:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"505\" data-end=\"730\">\n<li data-start=\"505\" data-end=\"537\">\n<p data-start=\"507\" data-end=\"537\">Prof. Dr. Sarab Khalil (Chair)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"538\" data-end=\"585\">\n<p data-start=\"540\" data-end=\"585\">Prof. Dr. Manal Jasem (Member and Supervisor)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"586\" data-end=\"625\">\n<p data-start=\"588\" data-end=\"625\">Asst. Prof. Dr. Huda Abd Ali (Member)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"626\" data-end=\"730\">\n<p data-start=\"628\" data-end=\"730\">Asst. Prof. Dr. Imad Haif Sameer from the College of Education \u2013 University of Anbar (External Member)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"732\" data-end=\"1043\">The study aimed to explore the role of <strong data-start=\"771\" data-end=\"799\">critical stylistic tools<\/strong> in literary texts, particularly in expressing <strong data-start=\"846\" data-end=\"864\">understatement<\/strong>, and how such tools affect the overall meaning. It focused on identifying the most prominent stylistic devices used and the underlying ideologies motivating authors in their use.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1045\" data-end=\"1316\">The thesis offers a comparative analysis of <strong data-start=\"1089\" data-end=\"1107\">understatement<\/strong> in the novels <em data-start=\"1122\" data-end=\"1143\">Pride and Prejudice<\/em> and <em data-start=\"1148\" data-end=\"1159\">Jane Eyre<\/em>, examining techniques such as <strong data-start=\"1190\" data-end=\"1201\">litotes<\/strong> (understatement by negation) and <strong data-start=\"1235\" data-end=\"1249\">downtoning<\/strong>, and how these contribute to shaping each novel\u2019s narrative style.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1318\" data-end=\"1335\"><strong data-start=\"1318\" data-end=\"1335\">Key Findings:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1336\" data-end=\"1909\">\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1336\" data-end=\"1452\">\n<p data-start=\"1338\" data-end=\"1452\">Understatement is clearly present in both novels and is often conveyed through <strong data-start=\"1417\" data-end=\"1451\">indirect linguistic strategies<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1453\" data-end=\"1607\">\n<p data-start=\"1455\" data-end=\"1607\"><strong data-start=\"1455\" data-end=\"1489\">Presupposition and implicature<\/strong> were found to be the most frequently used stylistic tools, due to understatement&#8217;s inherent reliance on indirectness.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1608\" data-end=\"1720\">\n<p data-start=\"1610\" data-end=\"1720\"><strong data-start=\"1610\" data-end=\"1648\">Litotes and downtoning expressions<\/strong> appeared more prominently in <em data-start=\"1678\" data-end=\"1689\">Jane Eyre<\/em> than in <em data-start=\"1698\" data-end=\"1719\">Pride and Prejudice<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1721\" data-end=\"1909\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1723\" data-end=\"1909\">The study highlights that <strong data-start=\"1749\" data-end=\"1810\">irony and deliberate avoidance of exaggerated expressions<\/strong> reflect the author\u2019s style and speaker\u2019s intentions, serving as effective forms of
